IBP vs S&OP: Key Differences for Your Supply Chain

S&OP and IBP: two terms, one ambition

Integrated Business Planning (IBP) is often presented as the natural evolution of S&OP. Both processes share the same fundamental goal: aligning the company's functions around a single plan. But IBP takes this logic further by systematically integrating the financial and strategic dimension.

S&OP: balancing demand and supply

Traditional S&OP focuses on a 3 to 18 month horizon. Its main goal is to balance forecast demand with production and supply capacity. It runs on a monthly cycle and involves sales, production and supply chain.

S&OP is the ideal starting point for midsize companies that do not yet have a structured planning process. It quickly brings visibility and coordination across teams.

IBP: bringing in finance and strategy

IBP extends S&OP by adding:

Systematic financial translation. Every operational scenario is immediately translated into its impact on the P&L, cash flow and balance sheet. The CFO is no longer a spectator but an active participant in the process.

A strategic horizon. IBP typically covers 24 to 36 months, making it possible to anticipate capacity needs, investments and changes in the product portfolio.

Integration with the business plan. The operational plan is directly linked to budget and strategic targets, eliminating the gap between the supply chain plan and the financial plan.

Which approach should you choose?

The choice between S&OP and IBP depends on your organizational maturity:

You are new to planning. Start with a solid S&OP. Put the foundations in place: a monthly process, demand forecasts, capacity review. This is the essential base before moving to IBP.

Your S&OP is mature. If your S&OP process has been running smoothly for more than a year, moving to IBP can accelerate your performance by bringing in finance and extending your planning horizon.

You are a large multi-site enterprise. IBP is often essential to coordinate complex operations across multiple countries, plants and channels. The consolidated view it provides is a competitive advantage.
